Description
The rare Jurassic Insect fossil from Solnhofen area, comes from the famous Solnhofen Limestones in Germany. The Insects that show up in the Solnhofen Lagune lived on nearby land. Astray, wind or streams must have carried them into the salty Solnhofen Lagoon, either already dead or to die on exhaustion. In general Insects are rare in the Solnhofen Limestones. Some species like the one here are even more rare and therefore not yet described. The majority of insects found in the Solnhofen Limestones are Dragonflies with many species.
The Jurassic Insect fossil from Solnhofen area here is 4.2 cm or 1.6 inches long. The wings are perfectly preserved and show a lot of beauriful detail and structure. Since the fossil is not prepped, legs are not showing. They are burried in the sediment. There is hints of an antenna in certain light conditions.
The specimen here resembles somewhat a Termite.
