Description
The rare Locust Elcana longicornis fossil comes from the famous Solnhofen Limestones in Germany. A long appendix to lay eggs points out a female. The Insects that show up in the Solnhofen Lagune lived on nearby land. Astray, wind or streams must have carried them into the salty Solnhofen Lagoon, either already dead or to die. In general Insects are rare in the Solnhofen Limestones. The Insect present here is a Locust of a now extinct family. There are some finds of these Locusts in the area.
The Jurassic Locust Elcana longicornis fossil here is including the long appendix to lay eggs 5.2 cm or 2 inches long. The appendix itself is 1.5 cm and a bit hard to see. It is a very fine structure to start with. The wings show structure. Legs and one antenna are present.
