Description
This medium sized Ammonite Taramelliceras (Fontannesiella) prolithograficum is found throughout the Malm Zeta 1, 2 and 3. The ones here come from the Moernsheim Formation, Malm Zeta 3. The Moernsheim Formation is just above the Eichstaedt Formation Malm Zeta 1 and 2 and almost the end of the Malm zeta. Due to environmental changes the sea levels are higher. That resulted in the opening of the Solnhofen Lagune to the ocean. New species moved in , others evolved due to changes. The species Subplanites moernsheimense replaced other Suplanites species of the Eichstaedt Formation and is only present in the Moernsheim Formation in the area. At the same time the Ammonite Taramelliceras (Fontannesiella) prolithograficum stayed the same. Best preserved in the so called Taramelliceras Bank on the top of the Moernsheim Formation.
The larger Ammonite is 5.3 cm or 2.1 inches in diameter the smaller ones are around 1.5 inches or 4 cm in size.
