Description

This  Harpoceras falcifer Ammonite is 16,5 cm or 6.5 ” in diameter.

The fossil is from the Oelschiefer. Oelschiefer is the name for the Posidonia Shale in the area of Holzmaden in Germany. It was used to produce oil from it. Since it was not economically it was not used anymore. Today it is also considered environment unfriendly.

Now the only working quarry in the area is the Kromer quarry in Ohmden next to Holzmaden. A black/grey decorative stone is mined out of the lower parts in the quarry. The fossil comes from above those layers. This Harpoceras falcifer comes from the Kromer Quarry.

There is a primer applied to the fossil. This is done in the process of preparation to all fossils from the Holzmaden Shales to make them more stable.

It is a quite large specimen of a Harpoceras falcifer in very good condition.
