Description

The Jurassic Fish Aspidorhynchus for sale here comes from the Muehlheim Quarry near Solnhofen. One of the species is Aspidorhinchus acutirostris. Aspidorhynchus acutirostris has been found in varius quarrys in the area. The fish was a ferocious hunter. There is more than one find of Aspidorhynchus entangeled with the flying Pterosaurus Ramphorhynchus. It is believed from fossil evidence, that the flying Pterosaurus Rhamphorhynchus hunted small fish like Leptolepides from the surface of the water. In the event Rhamphorhynchus became (accidental ?) prey to Aspidorhynchus hunting from below. There is at least four entangled fossils known. They are shown in the German online “Solnhofen Fossilienatlas”. You can see the link below. Write Aspidorhynchus or “Fische” into the search square and they will show.

The fossil here comes from the Moernsheim Formation at the Muehlheim Quarry. The Moernsheim Formation- Muehlheim Subformation (Malm zeta 3) is positioned directly on top of the Altmuehltal Formation-Eichstett Subformation (Malm zeta 1 and 2). Therefore it is up to 2 million years younger.

The Moernsheim Formation represents the end of the Solnhofen Lagune, that produced so many well preserved Jurassic Fossils. The fossil species in the Moernsheim Formation are somewhat the same as in the Eichstett Formation. Many of them continue. Some are new. And some have changed in evolutionary terms in those 2 million years since the beginning of the Solnhofen Lagune.

First overlooked, the Moernsheim Formation is now heavily studied in the last 14 years. The stone was not as usable for decorative purposes as the one from the Eichstett Formation. They are both “Plattenkalk, but one is more a limestone, the other (Moernsheim Formation) is silicated. That is due to environmental changes at the end of the Solnhofen lagune. The Solnhofen Lagune opened up to the ocean.

The opening of the now famous Muehlheim quarry near Solnhofen as a U-Dig quarry and the work of the enthusiastic owner and fossil collector Roland Poeschl changed that. Many new species where discovered at the Muehlheim quarry. Many of them don’t have names. The just recently (2017) discovered Alkmonavis poeschli represents probably the first real flying Dinosaur. 2 million years younger than the related glider Archaeopterix, it had the muscles to actually take off.

There will be some more surprises in this promising quarry.

The Aspidorhynchus here is foldet and therefore hard to measure. The fossil is about 30 cm or 1 ft long. The Jurassic Fish Aspidorhynchus for sale here is excellent preserved and prepared. The visible crack is a natural mineralised crack and not glued.
