Description

This very rare Lytoceras siemensi Ammonite for sale, comes from the Lias epsilon 2, or Oelschiefer. It is elsewhere known as Posidoniashale. The fossil was quarried in the Kromer family quarry in Ohmden near Holzmaden. It is the last remaining quarry in the area. The fossil is 14 cm or 5.5 inches. Like to all other fossils from the Oelschiefer a primer is applied.

Lytoceras siemensi is found in the Fleins Lias epsilon 2 (3) and the Untere Schiefer Lias epsilon 2 (4). They are part of the lower Posidonia Shale, which is called Oelschiefer ( Oil Shale) in the area of Holzmaden. That is thanks to the fact that it was used to produce oil (Oel in German). Since the production of oil has seized the production in the quarries has too. Today there is only the Kromer Family Quarry that is still worked. From the lower levels of the quarry a solid stone for window banks, stone tables as well as replacement, for example of stairs, in old buildings is quarried and processed. I wish, but I don’t think it will last much longer.
