Description
This Ammonite Lithacoceras is 19,5 cm or 7.75 ” in diameter. The plate is 11 x 8,5 inch or 28 x 21,5 cm. There is a crack trough the plate which has been glued. There is clear fixative applied to make the structures of the colorless fossil more visible and stabil. The work is done by professional preparation and common in the area. The Ammonite Lithacoceras comes from the Schaudiberg quarry near Muehlheim, which is located next to Solnhofen. The Muelheim quarry resembles in its upper parts the so called Muelheim Formation. About 50 years ago the Muehlheim Formation was considered part of the Solnhofer Plattenkalk. It was not quarried but discarded since it was different to the Plattenkalk. The Muehlheim Formation sits directly on the Plattenkalk. Many fossils are the same, but some , due to environmental changes are different. The formation is therefore slightly younger.
