Description
Beautiful preserved and prepared Aeger tipularius fossil from the Eichstaedt area, Dendrites creating an ocean panorama.
This Aeger tipularius fossil measures 12,8 cm or 5 inch from head (tip of rostrum) to the end of the tail. Slab is 23 cm x 13 cm or 9 inch x 5 inch. Aeger is one of the more common Crustaceans in the Solnhofen Limestones, but that does not mean there is lots. In general fossils are scarce in the Solnhofen Limestones.
The Solnhofen Limestones(Solnhofer Plattenkalk in German language) date about 144 million years and belong to the Upper Jurassic period. This in color white Jurassic is called White Jurassic or Malm. Within the Upper Jurassic, the Solnhofen Limestones are in the upper parts before the Cretaceous Period starts.
Due to less demand in decorative stones the production of Solnhofen Limestones slowed down since the 1990’s. Many quarries closed down. The final blow came in July 2023, when production seized (for now?). The storages for Solnhofen Limestones are full.
