Description
Here is a very large Trilobite Asaphiscus wheeleri from Utah. They don’t get larger. The specimen here is 5 cm or 2 inches in lenght. The heavy slab measures 28 cm by 14 cm or 11 by 6 inches.
The Trilobite Asaphiscus wheeleri is found in the Wheeler Shale in Utah. The species is more rare than his companion Elrathia kingii. Large specimen like the one here are even rarer.
Wheeler Shale occurs around the town of Wheeler in Utah after which it is named. The deposits date to the mid Cambrian period and they are about 507 million years old. Trilobites are preserved in black Calcite and occur in very beautiful condition. A smaller Perenopsis interstricus Trilobite is seen below the tail of the Asaphiscus. A Asapphiscus imprint shows up on the backside of the slab and what is probably Bollaspidella.
