Description
Well preseved Metacanthina barrandei pair from the Casablanca area in Morocco for sale. The Trilobite has been first described from the Lower Eifelian of the Armorian Massif in France. The type species is Cryphaeus barrandei and named by De Tromelin and Lebesconte. Oehlert described the Trilobite in 1889. Metacanthina barrandei is finally named in 1954 by Pillet. It is the only known species of the genus. Other morphologically related specimen where assigned by Gandl in 1972 to the genus. They are now separated from the genus, since they are to different from the type specimen. New finds of M. barrandei in the Casablanca area of Morocco, brought these Trilobites to collectors.
Even in literature Hollardops mesocristata from the Upper Emsian is sometimes mistaken for Metacanthina barrandei from the Lower Eifelian. They are two different species in appearance and also based on type species and geological stages they are found in.
The M.barrandei Trilobites for sale here are well preserved. All facet eyes show in perfection and detail. The tail of the larger Trilobite is folded under the body. A Echinoderm is also present on the rock. The visible part of the larger Trilobite here is 1.75″ or 4.5 cm. The smaller Trilobite is 1.15″ or 4.1 cm long. The fossil is authentic.
