Description
Quality rare Permian Clam Anthraconauta from the Permian of Thuringia. The bigger specimen in the center is 2.2 cm or 1.8 inches long. There are more than five specimen not counting the imprints on this rock, some of them partially burried in the matrix. The clam fossils are in good quality and show a lot of structure. The fossil slab is collected in the 1989. After the early 2000’s the layers with the clams located in the old mine schaft, where burried with debry. They where about 2.5 to 3 meters down the shaft entrance. Besides the mine is now on the border or eventually just in the lately designated extendet biosphaere reserve.
Anthraconauta is a freshwater clam. In the location here the clam lived in shallow, small probably swampy ponds or lakes. Just below the layer with the clams is a layer containing fish.
According to Hartmut Hauboldt in Die Lebewelt des Rotliegenden (1982), the clams of the late Carbon and early Permian, like the Permian Clam Anthraconauta can vary in shape, dependind in which sediment they where found. In sandy sediments they lived burried upright in the sediment. They where more elongated. In more grey to black tonestein with over 10 % carbon they burried horizontal and plowed the upper layers. These where shorter buildt.
