Description
The rare Solnhofen Insect fossil from the Jurassic, comes from the famous Solnhofen Limestones in Germany. The Insects that show up in the Solnhofen Lagune lived on nearby land. Astray, by wind or streams they got carried into the salty Solnhofen Lagoon, either already dead or to die on exhaustion. In general Insects are rare in the Solnhofen Limestones. The majority of insects found in the area are Dragonflies with many species.
The Solnhofen Insect fossil here is about 2.2 cm or 0.8 inches long, from wingtip to the front of the head. The insect is well preserved. Antenna are present. There is a finish applied to the insect, which is common to protect the fossil and to highlight the structures.
