Description
The rare Jurassic Wood Wasp Myrmicium fossil comes from the famous Solnhofen Limestones in Germany. The insects that show up in the Solnhofen Lagune lived on nearby land. Wind or streams must have carried them into the salty Solnhofen Lagoon. The Jurassic Wood Wasp Myrmicium here measures 4.2 cm or around 1.7 inches. The slab is about 13 inches or 33 cm long and 8 inches or 20.4cm wide. The wings with structure , legs , body and antenna of the Wasp are visible. The name Horntail derives frome the spike on the end of the abdomen. It is used to pirce trees in order to lay eggs. The specimen here seems to be a male, since the spike is missing.
