Description
This specimen of Aeger tipularius is actually 10,5 cm or 3,9 inch long if stretched. Slab is 25,5 cm x 19,7 cm or 10 x 7,75 inches. Aeger tipularius is one of the more common fossil Crustaceans found in the quarries of the Solnhofen/ Eichstaedt area. But that dos not mean that there is a lot of them found. All fossils of the Solnhofen Limestone are scarce. To find fossils other then Ammonites in certain layers you have to put in a lot of hours to get the finds. Even a quarry worker who breaks the stone every day dos not find fossils every day. After finding the fossil hours of preparation under a stereo microscope take place, to get the often hidden fossil out. Most of the fossils sold here are prepared by professionals, that do it every day. However the pristine conservation of the fossils is worth it.
Due to less demand in decorative stones the production of Solnhofen Limestones slowed down since the 1990’s. Many quarries closed down. The final blow came in July 2023, when production seized (for now?). The storages for Solnhofen Limestones are full.
