Description

Cephalopod Muensterella scutellaris rostrum for sale. The fossil comes from the Muehlheim Quarry near Solnhofen in Bavaria, Germany.

The rostrum of the Cephalopod Muensterella scutellaris here is 8 cm or 3.25 inches for the round patella. With the spiny part included it would be if streched, about 16 cm or 6.3 inches long. The limestone slab is 30 cm by 27 cm or 11.75 inches by 10.6 inches.

The Cephalopod Muensterella scutellaris is also known to have soft parts preserved.

There is also a drawing showing muscle imprints. While I wondert that this one had a high price to start with and the unusual preparation of the part below the gladius, I noticed some almost invisible structures. UV light shows some discoloration in parts of that area. Not much!

Use the picture from the link above!

First the shady part just inside the preparation area resembles the outlining of the soft parts of the octopus. Almost invisible and only if you know what to look for according to the drawing, there seemes to be an imprint of the bucal mass, about 1.5 cm below the tip of the rostrum.

To the front of it starting from the tip of the rostrum forward to the middle is a ridge. That could represent the circular muscle. In the middle of that ridge, about 1.5 cm towards the patella are 4 tiny structures in the same direction of that ridge. Circular Muscle.

There is also a partial print coming from the middle of the patella just crossing the circular muscle. It does represent the retractive muscle imprint.

There are specimen shown in the Solnhofen Fossilienatlas, some with soft tissue, link below.
