Description
Very good preserved Fossil Crinoid Star Comaturella formosa from the Solnhofen Limestones of Zandt. These Crinoids are called Sea Lilies are also called Feather Stars, when they swim free. Todays species are attached to surfaces when they are young, but some swim free, when older. Some swim free in general, or at least crawl on the sea floor, with no stem attached. These belong to the order Comatulida. Some seems to be attached to surfaces in general. There is an interesting article here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crinoid.
In the Solnhofen area are two species known, the large and rare Comaturella formosa from the location Zandt and the large species Comaturella pinnata from the direct Solnhofen area. Further there is a small species Saccocoma tenelli, which is very common in the Eichstaett area. A fourth species Solanocrinites thiollierei is only known from a scientific dig in Brunn near Regensburg.
Comaturella was called also Pteracoma and Antedon in the past.
The Fossil Crinoid Comaturella formosa here is 8.2 cm or 3.25 inches long. The Solnhofen Limestone slab is 33 cm or 13 inches by 25 cm or 10 inches.
