Description

Large Solnhofen fish fossils Leptolepides sprattiformis involved in this assemblage. The bigger one measures about 5 inch or 12,7cm from head to tail, the smaller one measures about 2,3 inch or 6 cm. Leptolepides sprattiformis is a small fish the size of a sprat. It reaches 5 to 7 cm in length. In the very upper layers of the Solnhofen Limestones, they get larger in size. These layers are represented at Langenaltheim. Large specimen are also found in the Moernsheim Formation on top of the Solnhofen Limestones. Large specimen are more rare than the smaller ones and could be determined a new subspecies in the future. The large Solnhofen fish fossil of a Leptolepides here, represents one of those.

A fixative (Tiefengrund) is used to fix and highlight the fossils. It is common and done by the professional preparators in the area. Nice preserved Solnhofen fish fossils with lots of detail.
