Description
This mortality plate with the Ammonite Dactylioceras commune for sale here comes from the upper layers of the Kromer quarry in Ohmden near Holzmaden. It belongs to the Jurassic Lias epsilon 3.
The rock formation they come from is called Oelschiefer or also Posidoniashale. The quarries in the area have been quarried for oil, which gave the name to the Oelschiefer. After the production became uneconomically the quarries stopped producing. Now the Kromer quarry is the only one that still produces a valuable work stone. Oelschiefer is also called Posidoniashale in other areas, due to the occurrence of clams. These clams where earlier considered belonging to the genus Posidonia. Like on any other fossil from the Oelschiefer a protective primer is applied. It preserves the fragile structures of the fossils.
Among many Dactylioceras Ammonites is also the Ammonite Hildoceras present. The slab is is 17,5 by 16 cm. The larger Dactyliocers and the Hildoceras are a bit over 2 cm or 0.75 inches in size
The Holzmaden Ammonite Dactylioceras commune occurs in the Lias epsilon 2 and 3. The slab comes from the lowest Wilder Schiefer which is the start of Lias epsilon 3.
