Description

The Lower Cambrian Trilobite Serrodiscus (Eodiscus) silesius for sale here on fossilcave.com is a rarity. Serrodiscus silesius comes from the Ludwigsdorf area near Goerlitz in Germany. The Trilobite comes from the upper part of the Lower Cambrian Period. The last quarries closed around 1988 or 1999 and filled fast with water. Even before finds where not abundant. I have visited the quarries just after closure of the last one. The Great Ludwigsdorf Quarry was still open. Collecting of fossils was hard due to the very unusual steep quarry slopes. I would guess they where somewhere around a 60 degrees angle, may bee 70. It was almost not manageable to get down into the around 70 meter hole. I was not even sure if I would get back up. Sliding down the slope, there was little fossils at all. I managed to recover some Hyolithes and some Serrodiscus. All together there are only 4 to 5 different Trilobite species known from these quarries. Serrodiscus is the more known one. I seen only one complete specimen in the berlin Museum of Natural History. The Cambrian Trilobite Serrodiscus silesius occurs only in the upper part of the Ludwigsdorf Subformation and the Lusatiops Subformation. Before their appearance in the upper layers only Cyanobacteria or Algae where discovered below.

Serrodiscus is a faceless and eyeless Trilobite. It is believed That Serrodiscus could enroll himself for protection. This could be also an explanation, why there are so little complete specimen where discovered. We only see one part of the enrolled Trilobite.

The Lower Cambrian Trilobite Serrodiscus silesius is a small Trilobite. The Cephalon measures about 0.6cm or 0.25″. There is also a Pygidium on the rock and a negative of one.
