Description

Large fossil clam Plagiostoma giganteum from the Toarcian of Airvault in France for sale here. These quite large clams occur in the Lower Jurassic, of Europe. It can be found for example at Lime Regis in Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, Frick in Switzerland and like this one by Airvault in France. The genus Plagiostoma genus is seen from the Lower Triassic to the Middle Cretaceous worldwide. Some fossil clams from the genus Lima are now also incuded into the genus Plagiostoma. Their size is impressive. This Plagiostoma giganteum here measures 15 cm or 5.9 inches across. It is left natural and sits on the Toarcian matrix from the location with other clam shell imprints and remains.  Beautiful piece.
