Description
This green Ammonite Orthosphinctes for sale comes from the location Endress Quarry in Graefenberg, a commercially used quarry in Bavaria which covers Malm gamma 1 and 2. The Ammonite has turned into Glaukonite which creates the green color of the fossil. These green Ammonite Orthosphinctes fossils come from the lowest layers of the Quarry and have been collected years ago when these layers where better exposed for collection. Orthosphinctes appears in the Malm gamma 1 at the bottom of the quarry. The very similar Ammonite Ardescia may have evolved from Orthosphinctes. It comes from the upper part of the quarry and resembles Malm gamma 2. In their first stages of growth the two look exactly the same. The third stage of growth is slightly different. If you find two Ammonites in the first growth stages with no context to the layers, you would think they are the same species.
The Ammonites of the Malm gamma are hard to determine, since they change in evolution. Another challenge is the growth of the Ammonites which seams to appear in 3 stages and finally due to sexes. There is new work in progress to find new keys for specimen determination.
The large green Ammonite for sale here is 9 cm or 3.5 ” in diameter.
