Description

The Leptolepides from Solnhofen for sale here appears uncolored. Sometimes they come in a reddish or brown color out of the quarries. And sometimes Preparators enhance them with some coloration to bring the structures out. On this natural uncolored specimen the complete tail fin is almost invisible on a photograph. It is there. Leptolepides sprattiformis is a very common fossil in the Solnhofen area and occured sometimes in mass assemblages. They where called the “Fischli Flinz”. It was just the one layer that contained these mass mortality assemblages and showed up in different locations. Most famously was the Apfelthal quarry, but closed years ago. Also in closed by Langenaltheim these layers have been present, but in a higher level than todays very small production takes place. Often the fish is shown in pairs. Some believe that the fish died during mating. Experiments showed also that dead fish can assemble in pairs due to water turbolence. Perhaps it might be both since many fish species die after mating and wash up together in large quantities.

The small fish is 7 cm or 2.75 inches long. The slab is 16 cm or 6.25″ long and 13 cm or 5.1 inch wide. A nice small slab with well preserved fossil fish. Leptolepides sprattiformis.
