Description
Another quality Scabriscutellum furciferum Trilobite for sale from Morocco. Note that this one varies a bit from the typical Scabriscutellum furciferum. Some remnants of spines appear on the thorax segments of the Trilobite. The cephalon shows also some tiny tubercles on the surface. They are not typical for Scabriscutellum furciferum. The Cephalon is also broader and extends the pleura. That points somewhat towards Scabriscutellum hammadi. Scariscutellum is a genus first described by Golfuss as Bronteus scaber in 1843 (Type species). It is renamed by Richter and Richter in 1953 as Scabriscutellum.
There is one almost invisible crack through the Pygidium of the Trilobite. These cracks are not avoidable. They speak for the authenticity of the fossil. Moroccan Trilobites are mined. Unfortunately in the layers of the hardy Devonian rocks, fossils appear in all directions. Once the rock is broken, the fossil is discovered. Due to the nature of these rocks and the position of the fossil, the fossil is broken too. Experienced Preparators take on the task to glue them back together and to chisel or grind them out. In general cracks and some preparation marks are not avoidable and show that the fossil is real and not faked. There is no damage or replaced parts on this Trilobite.
The availability of pneumatic and air abrasive tools makes the work of the preparation even more efficient and qualitative upgraded. In some cases the use of Rewoquat does a great job. Features of the eyes, the body markings (pores etc.) and spines can be easier prepared out of the hardy rocks.
Moroccan Trilobites like this quality Scabriscutellum furciferum Trilobite for sale are often master pieces of preparation art. Mining of fossil and their preparation is a great source of income for the people, that live in the oasis of the Sahara desert. Whole villages depend on it. Some of the Trilobites processed take up to 100 hours of preparation. With an daily wage of 7 – 10$ Moroccan minimum wage, these prepared trilobites are still affordable. If stretched the Trilobite would measure over 1.5 ” or about 4 cm.
