Walliserops lindoei

Description

Museum quality Walliserops lindoei Trilobite for sale. Walliserops is a genus of Trilobite known mainly from Jbel Gara near Foum Zguid. Three described species occur here: Walliserops trifurcatus, Walliserops hammii, Walliserops tridens.  Three new proposed undescribed species known from other locations in Morocco (Jbel Issoumour and M’ssici). The genus Walliserops is closely related to the genus Comura.

The purpose of the outstanding horns is not clear, although they must be important to show off like that. Some think they are used to direct food to the mouth. Some believed it is sexual dimorphism until other species with different forks where found.  Would it be a fighting weapon, like beatles antlers? Are they sensors? Are they there to make them look bigger?

The fossil is 7 cm or 2.75 inches with the forked front extension measured.

The initial crack goes through the pleura near the tail on the right side of the Trilobite.

These cracks are not avoidable. They occur, when quarry workers crack the rock in order to find fossils. Fossils don’t grow on rocks, they hide inside. Unfortunately in the layers of the hardy Devonian rocks fossils appear in all directions. Once the rock is broken the fossil is discovered. Due to the nature of these rocks and the position of the fossil, the fossil is broken too. Experienced Preparators take on the task to glue them back together and to chisel or grind them out. In general cracks and some preparation marks are not avoidable and show that the fossil is real and not faked.

This Walliserops lindoei Trilobite measures 9 cm or 3.5″ from the front tip of the fork to the end of the tail.
