Description
Leptolepides sprattiformis is a small fossil Fish of the order Clupeiformis. The species is the most found fossil Fish in all the quarries of the Solnhofen and Eichstett area. Mass apearences in one layer occur in Langenaltheim/ Obere Hardt and in the long ago closed nearby quarry in Apfelthal. Miners called it the “Fishli Flinz”.
The specimen here is about 3.2 inches or 8.1 cm long. It is well preserved and shows all the fine bones.
Leptolepides sprattiformis is a affordable Fish fossil from the Solnhofen Limestones and a good start or addition in a fossil collection.
