Description
Unknown Jurassic Fish fossil from the Moernsheim Formation of the Muehlheim Quarry near Solnhofen. Preserved in some kind of decay this specimen shows a lot of detail. The tail and head bones are amazing preserved. The scales show all the engraved features. A true beauty of fossil fish. The slab has cracks and is professinal repaired. The surface is almost polished, which unfortunately destroied the structure of the two Aaptychs on top of the fish. On the other hand it brings the beauty of the fish fossil out. Moernsheim Formation rocks are somewhat rough on the surface. The approach here is an upgrade.
The Muehlheim Quarry only 2 or 2,5 km from Solnhofen has been established as a u dig fossil quarry by Roland Poeschl. Ever since thousands of visitors come every year to dig for fossils. Roland Poeschl himself digs systematically for fossils himself. It led to many new discoveries. Unknown Jurassic Fish species, Crocodilians and most famous the first actually flying Archaeopterix-like Alkmonavis poeschli. First thought to be an Archaeopterix it became clear, that this specimen had the muscles to take of. Alkmonavis poeschli has a bit more robust bones than Archaeopterix and shows imprints of strong muscles.
In the past neglected, the Moernsheim Formation in the Muehlheim Quarry, which opened up a window into the Moernsheim Formation, is now famous. The Moernsheim Formation is located on top of the Eichstaedt Formation known as the Solnhofen Limestones (an industrial term) and is at the most 2 Mio years younger. That gives an opportunistic window into evolution. The change in the marine environment at the time has some species disappaering and others continuing. Many species from the Eichstaedt Formation continued to exist into the Moernsheim formation and new ones showed up. There will be more discoveries in the future. Many species like this jurassic fish here have no name at this time.
Note that a small part of the upper tail fin is missing and is only colorated (more red). The fish measures 15,5 cm or 6.1 inches.
