Description
Rare Mecochirus brevimanus from the Solnhofen Limestones for sale. The Mecochirus here is about 5.3 inches or 13.5 cm long, measured from the front of the arms to the end of the tail. The slab is 28 cm x 21 cm or 11 inches x 8.25 inches.
Experts say Mecochirus is one of the most difficult fossils to be preparerd.
It is believed that Mecochirus did not live in the Solnhofen Lagune. It is believed that they lived in the nearby reefs and specimen got carried into the Solnhofen Lagune by waves in storms. It is also a theory that they lived in holes. Their long arms where used to catch prey from within. Some specimen where found with short trackways. Their long arms dragged behind. That suggests that they did not survive for long in the environment of the Solnhofen Lagune. To me, some track marks suggest that the water was gone at times, suggesting there was ebb and flood as in todays oceans.
The scientific name Mecochirus translates into long hands. The species Mecochirus brevimanus has shorter hands than its more common cousin Mecochirus longimanatus.
